How Can I Prevent Periodontitis?

Periodontal disease can negatively affect not only our oral health, but our overall physical health. Today, our Burlington dentists define periodontitis and offer tips on prevention.

What is periodontitis (gum disease)?

Periodontitis, also known as gum disease, is a condition that gradually affects your gums. It starts off painless during its early stage called gingivitis, which makes it easy for the disease to progress without you noticing any issues.

Plaque builds up on your teeth and along the gum line, and then hardens into a rough, porous deposit known as tartar or calculus. This leads to the formation of pockets between your teeth and irritated gums, where bacteria gather. These bacteria can contribute to other health problems like cardiovascular disease. Once the plaque hardens, only your dentist can remove it using special tools. 

As periodontitis advances, it can cause the loss of bone structure and deterioration of your gums, and eventually lead to tooth loss. In fact, gum disease is one of the main reasons why adults lose their teeth.

That's why it's crucial to prevent gum disease by thoroughly cleaning plaque through a daily routine of brushing and flossing, as well as regularly visiting your dental hygienist. These practices are essential for maintaining your oral health. 

How can I prevent periodontitis?

If you are looking for ways to lower your risk of gum disease, consider there are known tips:

Take inventory of your medications.  Check your medications as certain ones like antidepressants, heart medicines, and oral contraceptives can contribute to gum disease.

Increase your consumption of vitamins A and C, They are part of a healthy diet that helps prevent periodontitis. Reduce sugary and starchy food that promote plaque buildup.

Have dental issues treated quickly. Address dental issues promptly, such as teeth grinding or misaligned teeth, as they make it harder to clean properly and can lead to plaque growth. 

Gently massage your gums. Along with brushing and flossing regularly (at least twice a day for two minutes each time for brushing, and once daily for thorough flossing), you can gently massage your gums to improve blood flow to the tissue.

Use fluoride toothpaste. This key ingredient removes plaque bacteria along the gum line without irritating your gums

Quit smoking.  Because it not only increases the risk of gum disease but also impairs gum healing due to weakened immunity. 

Know your risks.  Understanding different risks that can cause gum disease,  including genetics, diet, age smoking, or other factors that make you more susceptible.  Knowledge empowers you to reduce your risk and maintain good oral health.
